The break was good; the air did him even better. How things had gotten so crazy so quickly, he couldn’t have explained if his life depended on it. But the short walk back to the hotel gave him only temporary respite. Mia’s silence and nearness just seemed to make desire settle between them like a squatter, refusing to budge, refusing to give ground, until he just gave up and threaded his arm around her waist.

It had felt like such a natural thing to do that muscle memory had propelled his limb forward on its own as they crossed the street and walked beneath the dark area of scaffolding a block away from the hotel. But what he wasn’t prepared for was for her to stiffen at his touch, and he immediately fell back with an apology lodged in his throat—then noticed why she’d frozen on him.

The asshole was back, and walking in their direction. He was with three of his friends. Ryan did a fast assessment. They’d come out of O’Hara’s, the watering hole across the street. From the look in the guy’s eyes, not only did he have three buddies with him, but he was also three sheets to the wind.

“So, we meet again,” David called out to Mia, shaking his head and laughing. But his eyes were hard, flashing fire.

“Man, let it go,” one of his friends said, trying to grab his arm, but David flung off his friend’s hold.

“Come on,” Mia said, her voice low and frightened. “Let’s cross the street. I don’t want any trouble—he gets really ugly when he’s drunk.”

“I don’t think so,” Ryan said, squaring his shoulders and making sure Mia was well behind him. He looked at the three buddies. They weren’t a problem; they’d only been out for a few beers and maybe to listen to a steinful of David’s bullshit. But David was snot-slinging drunk, had obviously seen his arm around Mia, and had spotted bags from the supermarket. Street basics told Ryan that this was a man ready to do something stupid.

“Why don’t you let the lady pass and be cool, man?” Ryan kept his voice neutral and logical as David got closer.

“Lady?” David scoffed and then looked at the supermarket bags. “If you say so.”

Ryan moved Mia to his opposite side with a gentle hand at her back. “Come on. I’m not dignifying that. You’re drunk.”

“Not here,” one of David’s friends whined. “Let’s not get into anything crazy, okay.”

“Listen to your boys,” Ryan warned as David continued to move in his and Mia’s direction. Mia’s ex had no idea how tightly wound he was after getting the encrypted text and seeing that someone was possibly tailing her. “I am not the one. Not tonight. Trust me, brother.”

“Fuck you—stay out of it,” David said, slurring his words. “This is between me and my bitch fiancée.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa. Fall back. Now.” The urge to glance back at Mia for corroboration that she’d been engaged to this asshole was nearly as strong as the urge to drop the fool before him, but Ryan held his ground.
